Sweet Potato Pancakes For Baby/Toddler/Kids
Super soft, moist baby sweet potato pancakes made with sweet potato puree, great for babies 6 months+, baby led weaning including toddlers and older kids. These pancakes can be made in advance and freeze well, so they can be used later in school lunchboxes.
Sweet Potato Pancakes For Babies / Toddlers /Kids
This recipe is another great way to serve and prepare sweet potato for babies when you want to incorporate some veggies into your child’s breakfast.
To make these baby sweet potato pancakes you need just one bowl and a few basic ingredients. The sweet potato puree can be made in advance or you can puree some previously cooked sweet potatoes (leftovers).
Alternatively you can try these easy grated sweet potato fritters/latkes, if you don’t have any puree.
Just like my other pureed based pancakes (baby banana pancakes, apple pancakes or pumpkin pancakes) these sweet potato pancakes yield a fluffy soft texture – perfect as breakfast finger food for babies without teeth (baby led weaning). For toddlers and older kids, you can dress the sweet potato pancakes up with fresh fruit, syrup, or yogurt.
Ingredients Needed
- Sweet potato puree – it provides moisture, softness, sweetness and binding properties for the pancake batter.
- Egg – is essential for binding and texture.
- Flour – use all-purpose flour (or whole grain). For gluten free version use a gluten free flour mix. You can also use a white whole wheat flour, it has the same nutritional content as whole wheat flour but creates a lighter sweet potato pancake. Oat flour, buckwheat flour or sorghum flour would also work.
- Butter – melted butter or oil – for extra flavor and moisture.
- Cinnamon + vanilla extract – for flavor.
- Baking powder – as the leavening agent (or use baking soda + lemon juice for the same effect).
- Salt and maple syrup – for older kids.

How To Make Sweet Potato Pancakes For Baby
Step 1. Prepare the sweet potato puree:
- Just like when preparing sweet potato for baby, you have the option to steam or roast the sweet potato. To puree you just add a little liquid to help blending. Mix in a food processor until it’s smooth and creamy. The smoother it is, the fluffier the sweet potato pancakes. If you mash the sweet potato with a fork, you’ll get a rougher pancake texture.
Step 2. Make The Pancake Batter:
- In a large bowl, combine the sweet potato puree, egg, the melted butter and vanilla. Mix to combine.
- Add dry ingredients: in the same bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Add 2-3 tablespoons of maple syrup and salt if your baby is older than 12 months. Stir just until everything combined. If your batter turned out very thick, add 2 tablespoons of water. Some whole grain flour tends to absorb a lot of liquid.
Step 2. Cook The Baby Sweet Potato Pancakes
- Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-low heat. You can use ghee, coconut oil or butter as fat for frying. If you want to cook the sweet potato pancakes without oil, use a ceramic non-stick skillet, it reduced the need of fat for frying considerably!
- Scoop the batter onto the skillet, using approximately 1.5 tablespoons for each pancake. Brown on both sides for approximately 2 minutes and serve.
How To Store The Baby Sweet Potato Pancakes
- Store leftovers for 2-3 days at room temperature, or refrigerator.
- Freeze up to 3 months: once the pancakes are completely cool, place a baking sheet with pancakes (lined with parchment paper) in the freezer for 1 hour or until pancakes are solid. Then transfer to a air tight container.
- Thaw / reheat: to warm, pop individual pancakes in a toaster. Or place them in a preheated oven at 350F and heat for 15 minutes.
Tips To Save Time
- Make the sweet potato puree in advance or use leftovers, like a previously made baby food.
- Mix the wet ingredients the night before and in the morning add the flour, baking powder and cinnamon to form the dough.
- Cook the sweet potato pancakes for baby in advance and freeze – it’s wonderful for meal prepping. Make a double, or triple batch and enjoy them all week long for a deliciously easy morning.
Pancake Substitutions/ Variations
- Sweet Potatoes: you can swap the sweet potatoes with other pureed veggies like butternut squash puree or pumpkin, the recipe will not change significantly.
- Add more nutrition: add some ground seeds like pumpkin seeds or hemp seeds.
- Opt for sweet potato fritters/latkes made with raw grated sweet potatoes for a more texturized sweet potato pancake version.

I LOVE this recipe! Even for myself, these pancakes are awesome. It’s worth doubling to at least 1 cup on sweet potato so it can make more pancakes.
Made these this morning and they were a hit! My 16 month lived them and so do I. Will be making again and again. The recipe was great for using extra sweet potatoes I had baked.
Could I use this batter to make muffins?
Honestly I’m not sure, never tried.
Yes you can! I just made muffins with this recipe and they turned out great. 200C, 25 min. I put 1 heaping tbsp of batter into each muffin case and they didn’t grow to fill the whole case, but they were thoroughly cooked.
My daughter (1 yr) loves these! I make a lot and freeze so we always have some on hand. I add flax meal to make them even healthier 🙂
Thank you!
Do you think I could use canned pumkpin puree instead of sweet potato?
Sure you can use pumpkin puree.. actually I have a great recipe for pumpkin pancakes, if you want to check that out: https://thrivingnest.com/baby/pumpkin-pancakes/
These sweet potato pancakes are amazing, so soft and sweet, I didn’t even need to add sugar.
I’m really glad you liked them!
