Turkey Patties For Babies / Toddlers /Kids

Easily make these mini turkey burger patties without egg and breadcrumbs (the avocado makes them nice and soft & provide nutrients) – they’re best served with vegetable purees.

The ground turkey patties can be made ahead of time, they’re freezer friendly, and perfect when doing GAPS diet for babies and older kids. Suitable for school lunch box as well.

Constantly coming up with healthy meal ideas for babies and toddlers is a full time job in itself.  That is why I like to have some easy baby meals stashed in the freezer. The best part: it’s convenient to have baby food that can be mixed and matched with vegetables, grains or pasta to create meals throughout the week. 

Ingredients For Turkey Avocado Patties

  • Ground turkey – for a softer patty use thigh meat, and preferably organic.
  • Avocado – ripe soft avocado, diced. Mash with a fork if you’re worried about chocking.
  • Lemon juice – the sourness will provide a zesty kick and preserve the avocado’s green color.

  • Onion – diced, for flavor (onion powder also works).
  • Garlic – minced, for flavor.
  • Coriander – it will bring some citrusy, nutty and woody taste. It improves the taste a lot if you’re not using any salt for small babies.
  • Salt + black pepper – for babies older than 12 months.
  • Egg – acts as a binding agent. See recipe card below for egg free version.
  • Fat for frying – use oil, ghee, or animal fat (I used ghee).

How To Make Turkey Patties For Baby

How to prepare turkey patties for babies and toddlers - process shots.
  1. Prepare the ingredients: chop the onion, dice the avocado and mince the garlic.
  2. Combine: mix the ground turkey meat, the raw egg, avocado, onion, garlic, lemon juice and seasonings.
  3. Form small patties: take about 1/2 tablespoons of mixture and form a ball, flatten in your palm or with a spatula. Be sure they are uniformly flat so they cook inside well at the same rate.
  4. Fry: In a preheated skillet (make sure the pan and oil is hot enough, the fritters should sizzle when dropped in. Not too hot though, you need them to cook inside too.) place the patties and cook until the underside is nicely golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook on the other side. Continue cooking, adding more oil if needed.

Recipe Variations:

  • Egg free – add about 2 tablespoons of flour instead. Or you can omit them entirely. The turkey patties will have a tougher texture but it’s totally doable.
  • Add flavor: add cheese, herbs, and other vegetables.
  • No ground turkey – use ground chicken instead.

Oven Baked Turkey Patties

If you decide to bake them in the oven instead of frying, then preheat the oven at 400 F. Bake the turkey patties on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper (uncovered) for about 18-20 minutes, or until middle is cooked through.

Tips For Making Ahead

Gather the ingredients and form the patties, place them on parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Freeze them raw. Once frozen transfer them in a plastic bag and keep frozen for up to 3-4 months. When you need a quick finger food or meal for your baby, you’ll have fresh tasting turkey patties in no time!

How To Store

  • Store leftovers for 3-5 days in the refrigerator (closed container).
  • Freeze up to 3-4 months in an airtight container (see instructions above).
  • Thaw / reheat cooked patties – just pop them out of the freezer and place them on a parchment paper covered sheet. Cover with foil and reheat at 170C /350F until heated through (about 15-20 minutes.) If raw (let them thaw overnight in the refrigerator first)- then cook them on the skillet or in the oven as if they are freshly made.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground turkey (use thigh meat and preferably organic.)
  • 1 large avocado (ripe soft avocado, diced.)
  • 1 medium onion (diced for flavor (onion powder also works).)
  • 2 cloves garlic ( minced)

  • 3/4 tsp coriander (seed, ground)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/3 tsp sea salt + 1/4 tsp black pepper ( for babies older than 12 months)
  • fat for frying (oil, ghee butter or animal fat )

Instructions

    1. If you use guacamole the entire mixture will have a different texture (mushy). I used small diced chunks, that are somewhat separate and don’t affect the general texture.

    1. I would use a preheated oven at 400F for baking. Time: about 20-25 minutes. And I would turn the broil function for the last minute of baking for a nice brown surface color.

  1. Just made these tonight for my 10 month old and 3 year old and they both loved it, thank you! Recipe question for myself: when I mixed the ingredients, they were very wet and I wasn’t able to roll it into a ball and when I flattened it, it was hard to then lift off and put in the pan. Why do you think that is? Thank you!

    1. It probably has to do with the quality of the meat (in this case the ground turkey) and the amount of moisture in the meat. Try no to mix it too much, just enough to combine all ingredients. Sometimes the texture breaks even more when overworked. Also placing the patties right away in the hot pan after rolling works better than forming them all on the side.

    My son (16m) absolutely loves these! I think I may have commented before but this is my 3rd time making them because he devours these. I added some finely grated carrots this time around; hopefully he still enjoys them.

    I made these and they came out as a wet sopping pile of gunk after coming out of the oven. Why is there no breading or flour in the recipe?
    Severely disappointed after making these as a special meal for my baby and it was a tray of soup.

    1. You probably didn’t follow the recipe correctly or you used a low temperature in your oven. But even if the temperature is low there are no ingredients in this recipe that would make the patties wet. The egg and meat are binding everything together perfectly and you don’t need flour or bread to do that. They are usually used to make the patties softer.

        I made these as well in the oven and they turned out the same. Followed the recipe to a T. Soppy mess. I think it may have to do with me using the ground turkey in the tube rather than freshly ground turkey. O pan fried half of them and they fell right apart as well. I should have frozen them first.

  4. I would love to meal prep these for my baby! Do they need to unthaw before cooking when made a head of time or do you cook then straight from frozen?

    1. I’ve cooked them from frozen many times, I just put a top on the pan to let them steam for a bit and they turn out great every time!

  5. Hi! Could I leave the avocado out? I wouldn’t mind trying it in a different form, but maybe in like 1 not the whole batch. Avocado makes my baby’s face break out!

    1. These patties are absolutely delicious. My 9 month old goes nuts for them. I added mushrooms and parsley. Froze them raw and it’s great everytime I take it out to pan fry.

    These were great! My picky one year old ate them up, & my even pickier husband gave them a thumbs up. I love that they’re a convenience food w/o all the unknown ingredients. Definitely making these again!
